Daniel van Heyst

Daniel vanHeyst has been teaching art and drama courses at King's since l993. Currently he teaches Introduction to Theatre and Stagecraft in the King’s Drama program, and visual art studio courses in two- and three-dimensional media. 

His work as a stage designer for over a hundred live theatre productions has been seen in professional, community, and school theatres throughout Western Canada. As the resident designer at Theatre Network from l982-1992, he specialized in designing first productions of new works by Alberta writers. He taught design at Artstrek, Alberta's summer drama program for teens, for seven seasons. Daniel has been providing set and costume designs every year since its inception to The Canadian Badlands Passion Play in Drumheller.  He created The Upper Room exhibit at the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. Daniel van Heyst paints in acrylics on canvas; his most recent solo exhibit ran at The Studio Gallery in St. Albert in Jan. 08. He is a past president of Theatre Alberta, and a member of CIVA (Christians in Visual Arts).

During his sabbatical 2007/08, he produced and designed the world premier of Should’ve by Nobel laureate in Chemistry Roald Hoffmann, which opened in Torino Italy at an international chemistry conference, and toured various Canadian universities.  He also designed productions at Red Deer College and Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon.  Daniel grew up on a farm near Brandon Manitoba. He attended Dordt College from 1975-1978. He with his wife Rhonda and two children are members of West End Christian Reformed Church.
