Visiting Research Fellowships

The King's University College is pleased to offer Visiting Research Fellowships to Christian academics and artists from other institutions.

King's is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada and of the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities. The University College has a 40-member faculty spread across a number of academic disciplines in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, business, education, and theology. Faculty members do research and publish regularly in peer refereed journals, and the faculty represents a lively research culture. Its members also have a continuing interest in pedagogy, several members having published in disciplinary teaching journals. A list of recent faculty publications is available on request.

The University College is located near a major research university, the University of Alberta, and is part of a local academic library consortium which includes over 5 million volumes; it can provide document retrieval from a number of other research university libraries. The University College is also fully connected with the Internet. King's welcomes Christian scholars and artists from other institutions to join its Christian academic community to share insights, pool intellectual resources, and help set new directions in Christian scholarship.

Benefits
King's Research Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • a free room in the University College's residence for the duration of the Fellowship. A room can be provided which is adequate for a married couple but not for a family. Fellows wanting family accommodations would have to arrange these independently, although the University College would make every effort to help identify suitable accommodations.
  • access to the University College's cafeteria meal plan on a cash or prepaid voucher basis.
  • office space and access to a computer and phone (scheduled practice or studio time for artists).
  • a free Internet account.
  • free access to the University College's library, including seamless access to all consortium collections and cost recovery document retrieval services.
  • an opportunity to consult with Christian scholars committed to integrating faith, learning, and living in a number of disciplines, as well as Christian academics at other institutions in the area.
  • an audience for work in progress via Faculty Colloquia.
  • access to other University College services such as fax (cost recovery).
  • a welcome to social gatherings of the University College community.

Normally, part of the Visiting Fellow's responsibility to King's would be to teach one upper-level undergraduate term course during the regular academic year, presumably associated with the Fellow's topic of research.

Other Costs
All living and research expenses other than room, on-site library, and Internet access costs will be borne by the Fellow.

Deadline and Term
To be assured of consideration, academics desiring a Fellowship should apply no later than March 1st prior to the beginning of the academic year in which the Fellowship is desired. Later applications will be considered if an opening is still available. Fellowships are available for variable periods of up to twelve months.

Criteria for Selecting Fellows
Applications will be reviewed and Fellowships awarded by the University College's Faculty Research Committee. Applications for Fellowships should address the following criteria:

1. Evidence of articulated Christian perspective in the applicant's discipline.
2. Academic merit, i.e., evidence of well-developed research plan and methodology, indication of command of the general field of study, as indicated by academic credentials, scholarly publications, presentations at academic conferences, or academic letters of reference. Full academic credentials preferred.
3. Possibility of collaboration with a King's faculty member (preferred).

The King's University College wishes to encourage international associations and so would consider applications from anywhere in the world.

Application Requirements
All applications for a King's Visiting Research Fellowship should include the following:

1. Letter of application, indicating the proposed dates for the Fellowship.
2. Complete curriculum vitae.
3. Two academic letters of reference recommending the applicant and research project.
4. A detailed description of the proposed research project, including a one-paragraph abstract, a description of any special resources required, an indication of how the applicant anticipates publishing the results of the project, and an indication of a King's faculty member, if any, the applicant would anticipate collaborating with, including an indication of that faculty member's willingness to collaborate. Even if collaboration is not anticipated, an applicant would be wise to consult with the appropriate King's department about the application.
