February 12-13, 2010: The Eagles sweep the Rustlers
The Eagles wrapped up there season this past weekend with a set of games against the Rustlers from Lakeland College. Since entering the conference in men’s basketball in 2003 the Eagles have not defeated the Rustlers. The Eagles were looking to end the 7 year drought.
In the Friday night contest the Rustlers came out strong as the Eagles continued the season long trend of slow first quarters. The Rustlers posted a 23-10 lead in the quarter but the Eagles dialled the Rustlers back finishing the quarter with 13-1 run to make the score 24-23 at the end of one quarter. Any confidence gained in the first quarter quickly evaporated as the Eagles started to turn the ball over and lost there poise as the Rustlers won the quarter 24-13 to take a ten point lead in the intermission.
The third quarter has proven problematic for the Eagles all season. This time though there was a change as the Eagles played inspired defence forcing turnovers that led to easy scores on the offensive end topped off by two crowd raising dunks in transition by Janis Assers. The Eagles outscored the Rustlers 30-10 to take a ten point lead into the crucial 4th quarter. The 4th quarter started very slowly for as the Rustlers came out inspired especially on the defensive end as the Eagles now started to turnover the ball. Late in the game the Rustles took a one point lead but the Eagles remained poised and took the lead back on a huge three pointer by senior Vince Akinyode. The Eagles built the lead to four and eventually broke the seven year losing streak with an 86-84 win on home court. The Eagles had 5 players in double figures with Jeremy Barrows leading the way with 20 points, Janis Assers with 16, Vince Akinyode with 14, Matthew Price with 12 points, and Marshall Price playing in his last regular season game with 10 points. The Eagles travelled east to Lloydminster on Saturday to face the Rustlers in the rematch. The Rustlers as expected came extremely hard with something to prove from the loss the previous night in Edmonton. The Eagles were very flat and played poorly in the first quarter. and were down 28-13 after the first quarter. The second quarter was almost the exact opposite as the Eagles redeemed themselves with a big quarter 23-13 to cut the lead to 5 points at the intermission.
The Eagles were encouraged at halftime having played poorly and only down five entering the 3rd quarter. The Eagles had there second big 3rd quarter of the season outscoring the Rustlers 27-15. The Eagles showed maturity and poise in the 4th quarter outscoring the Rustlers 26-23 to win the game 89-79 and a sweep of the weekend series. Jeremy Barrows was once again dominant scoring 26 points to average 23 point for the weekend and 60% on three point shooting for the weekend.
