01.26.12 - Eagles Fall to Thunder
On Saturday, the women's basketball team looked to redeem themselves
from their heartbreaking loss to the Concordia Thunder Friday night.
The Eagles came out a little timid, not taking control of the game as
per usual. The offensive end was a struggle for the Eagles but their
strong defense kept them side by side with the fast, guard oriented
Thunder. The Eagles battled hard throughout the entire first half but
nearing the end of the second quarter their defense fell short. Going
into half, the Eagles were down eleven points and looking forward to
starting fresh in the third. After a strong half-time talk, the Eagles
were confident that they could get it back. Unfortunately, once again
the Eagles came up short in the third and had to play major catch up in
the fourth. They fought their hardest in the fourth, outscoring the
Thunder 29-15. Down 25 with 5:00 left on the clock, the Eagles didn't
fold easy; they reached deep and extended their efforts as best they
could, but with not enough time left on the clock the Eagles fell to the
Thunder 73-64. Though they lost, the Eagles showed that they have a
lot of character as they never gave up. Great performances came from
Samantha Tennant with 16 points and 5 rebounds and the Player of the
Game award, Alexa Sackela-Geiger with 11 points, and Chelsea Dyck and
Julie Heavenor wih 10. Tamara Deunk finished with 6 rebounds alongside
Jessica "Memphis" Anderson with 7.
01.16.12 - Eagles Beat #4 Ranked team in Canada
The Eagles returned for the first league game of the New Year against
the 4th place nationally ranked Mount Royal Cougars from Calgary. The
Eagles came out with intensity from the start, winning the first half
and rattling the Cougars. The Cougars came out fighting and battled
back in the third quarter, and with some defensive breakdowns by the
Eagles, took a 16 point lead. The Eagles endured and their energy in
the fourth quarter proved to be too much for the Cougars to match, and
with some clutch free throws from Tamara Deunk and Jessica Anderson, the
Eagles took the win 68-60. Player of the Game award went to Jessica
'Memphis' Anderson with an impressive 4 points, 5 assists, and 10
rebounds.
Coming off a huge victory against the #4 ranked team in Canada, the
Mount Royal Cougars, the Eagles looked to finish off the weekend with a
sweep over the Lethbridge Kodiaks. Signs of fatigue showed as the
Eagles had a troublesome start to the game, but like true champions the
Eagle fought to the last whistle and never gave up in a losing effort
78-61. As always the Eagles had a combined effort from the entire
roster, but 2nd year newcomer Makenzie Johnston out of Princeton, BC
took Player of the Game honos with her usual shutdown defense and a
clutch performance on offense with 9 points when the Eagles needed it
most. The Eagles expect this shutdown defense to continue and with the
added offensive threat, this young guard’s performance can only go up.
The team looks to bounce back from the loss next weekend against the
Concordia Thunder.
12.6.11 - Eagles Get First Sweep of the Season!
The Eagles played at home for their last two games of the fall semester where they played host to the Keyano Huskies out of Fort McMurray. The game on Friday was a convincing win for the Eagles; they showed they had an offense that just could not be stopped, scoring 95 points to the Huskies 74. Tamara Deunk took Player of the Game honors with her 30 points and 7 rebounds, another one of her many double-doubles on the year for the 4th year post player out of Leduc.
Saturday night was much of the same for the Eagles, again winning by a big margin with the final score 86 to 63 leaving the Eagles with a 6-4 record for the first half of the season. 2nd year guard out of Wagner High school, Julie Heavenor, played an outstanding game scoring a career high 32 points! The team has come to expect great things from Julie and there is nowhere to go but up for this young player in the next semester and years to come.
11.21.11 - Eagles Split with Rustlers
After a week off, the Eagles got back to the hardwood this weekend matching up against the Lakeland Rustlers, looking to protect their home court against the second ranked team in the north. The Eagles did just that, coming out firing and full of energy ending the first quarter with a score of 26 to 18. Tamara Deunk dominated the defensive boards, while Karina Leslie was busy cleaning up the glass on the offensive end; both finished with double doubles. Chelsea Dyck played gritty defense the entire game to shut down the Rustlers' guards. While the girls had a few minutes of chaos and let the Rustlers hit a few key threes, the Eagles fought hard, maintained their lead, and finished with an 85-81 final score thanks to a few of Jessica 'Memphis' Anderson's key drives and free throws late in the fourth quarter to increase the Eagles lead. Also adding 17 and 14 points respectively, were guard/forward Sam Tennant and guard Julie Heavenor.
Coming off a great team win Friday night, the Eagles were looking to come away with another win on Saturday. However, the Rustlers were determined to make it a battle and came out much stronger in the first three quarters. The Eagles put together a very strong comeback in the fourth quarter, led by third-year Chelsea Dyck who was on fire from downtown and hit 7 for 11 three pointers. Working as a team, the Eagles crashed the boards hard and came back from a 19 point deficit to bring the game to within 2 points, but just could not hold on as they got into foul trouble and Lakeland pulled away again and won 84-69. Player of the game for the Eagles was Chelsea Dyck, with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Eagles have a bye weekend coming up and will take
advantage of the time off to prepare to take on the Keyano Huskies at
King's on Dec.2 at 6pm and Dec.3 at 1pm.
11.7.11 - Eagles Split in the South
The King's women faced off against Red Deer College in
their gym Friday night. It was a close game in the beginning with Red
Deer having a number of tall players and neither team showing strong
offense. However, King's came out strong in the second half out scoring
and running the floor well showing they were a much more athletic
team. Wining the game 63-48, King's brought their season record to 3-2
hoping to build from there. This game was a good opportunity for King's
to work together as a team, work on the little things, and get
contributions from every player on the team. Player of the Game for the
Eagles was Tamara Deunk with another double-double, scoring 25 points
and pulling down 10 rebounds.
The Eagles went
into SAIT in Calgary on Saturday looking to end their splitting streak,
but were unable to do so. The girls weren't on their game, only taking
40 shots throughout the game when they average 65.33 field goal attempts
per game prior to Saturday. The lack of offence hindered the ability
of the Eagles to defeat the second ranked team in the South. The team
did not come out strong, having an ugly first half but managed to stay
within 9 points. In the second half, the Eagles didn't step up and SAIT
was hot with their shots. Player of the Game for the Eagles was 1st
year Vanessa Gulayets who was a spark off the bench.
After
the weekend, the Eagles Women's basketball team is stuck with a split
record of 3-3, but hope to end the splitting weekends on the 18th and
19th against Lakeland College.
10.31.11 - Eagles Split with Vikings
The King's University College women's basketball team went into their second regular season weekend hungry for a sweep. Friday night they visited the Augustana campus where the crowd is always loud and the Vikings were there to make a point. Although King's battled hard against the Vikings they were unable to get the W. Shooting just 26-90 from the field, the Eagles were having an off night. The Eagles ultimately lost 75-66. Karina Leslie battled hard and received a double double, while Player of the Game Chelsea Dyck finished with 13 points in the loss.
The second night was the Home Opener for the Eagles and they were determined to bounce back after a hard loss the previous night. The Eagles started off slow, trailing the Vikings by three going into the second quarter. However, that did not phase the Eagles as they went into the half up by 9 with some very clutch shots by Jessica (the fourth year sensation) Anderson. The Eagles knew that they had to put Augustana away at the start of the third in order to get the W. The Eagles however got into some foul trouble but still obtained the lead and fought solidly until the end. The Eagles won 74-60. Earning the Player of the Game honours with an outrageous outing was Jessica Anderson or as her teammates know her, "Memphis", with 12 very crunch time points. Tamara Deunk also had a good game with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
The Eagles take on their first opponents from the south this upcoming weekend at Red Deer College on Friday night, and then to SAIT in Calgary on Saturday night. Both games are at 6 pm.

The King’s University College women’s basketball team
made their way to Montana this past weekend for some exhibition games
against Rocky Mountain College and the Montana State University
Northern-Skylights. On Friday night the Eagles came out strong from the
start exchanging baskets and playing with pride and passion. As the
game progressed the Eagles found themselves playing catch up as the
Rocky Mountain College Bears started to heat up as they shot 50% in the
first half from behind the arc and pushed the halftime score to 51-23.
The Eagles continued to battle and couldn’t overcome the huge deficit as
they lost the first game 90-57. Leading scorer was Tamara Deunk who
