Coach Jesse McLean is starting his first year as Head Coach with the King’s Men’s Basketball program after serving as assistant coach last season.
Jesse graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor in Secondary Education with a Physical Education Major and Biology minor. He now teaches Junior High in the Parkland School Division.
Jesse has been coaching basketball at various levels for the last 11 years with the majority of those years in Drumheller coaching the Senior Boys Basketball team at Drumheller Composite High School. There, he helped turn around a program that hadn’t been to provincials in 30 years but is now a perennial powerhouse at the 2A level.
In the summer, Jesse runs basketball camps along with his Associate Head Coach, Chad Pidhaichuk, through their group “Badlands Basketball”. For 6 years the two of them, along with their staff of coaches, have put on weeklong camps, weekend clinics and coaching clinics in a number of communities in Alberta and BC.
Jesse’s coaching philosophy is one centered on character and work ethic:
“In my 11 years coaching basketball I have had the opportunity to work with so many great young men and women and I have always tried to instill in them one simple idea. I don’t just coach good basketball players, I coach good people. Through the game of basketball an athlete should learn components of character that transfer in to their lives as well. Hard work, discipline, fair play, teamwork, sacrifice, and leadership are all just as much a part of life as they are a part of being on a team. My players will work hard, will compete at the peak of their ability, but they will never lose sight of the things that matter more than basketball.”
Jesse is excited to see the King’s Men’s Basketball program continue to improve and work towards more and more success in the coming seasons.
