Women's Volleyball: Grande Prairie (January 15-16, 2010)

After a tough weekend against SAIT, the Eagles came out on fire against the Grande Prairie Wolves Friday night at home, winning the first set 27-25. The next two sets were also close losing 20-25 and 23-25; however, the Eagles seemed to lose their focus in the fourth set losing 11-25 allowing the Wolves to win the match. Player of the Game was #12 Jenn Clayton who acquired 16 kills for the night, an impressive 4 kills per set.

On Saturday, the Eagles proved that they were ready to take on the Wolves in a battle that would last 5 sets. The Eagles took an early lead winning the first set 25-22 and continued to gain momentum by defeating the Wolves 25-16 in the second. This momentum came to a sudden halt in the third set when the Wolves came out swinging and the Eagles simply could not keep up defensively. Determined to not repeat the following weekend where they lost to SAIT after a 2-0 lead, the Eagles fought hard in the fourth set but came up short, losing 21-25. In the fifth set the Eagles led 9-2 at one point and finished the match 15-12. Player of the Game went to second year right side Aidyn Rayment who had 10 kills and 15 digs for the night.

Next weekend the Eagles take on the MacEwan Griffins.

Women’s Volleyball- SAIT (January 8-9, 2010)

It was a disappointing weekend for the Women’s Eagles’ Volleyball team as they took on SAIT, losing both matches in the Provincial Pool opener. Friday night started off well with the Eagles easily winning the 1st set 25-18. Just a few points into the second set, 4th year setter Sarah Veikle injured her ankle and was unable to play for the remainder of the match. First year setter, Hayley Cattell, was then called in to lead the team. The Eagles found a way to win the second set 25-18 and were well on their way to sweeping SAIT 3-0 with a commanding lead of 16-9 in the third set, when the team seemed to lose their mental focus.

To the credit of the SAIT Trojans, they fought their way back into the set winning 25-21 and into the match, defeating the Eagles 3-2. Player of the Game went to Hayley Cattell, while second year players Jenn Clayton and Sandra Veikle had outstanding games. Sandra Veikle had 24 digs for the match (4.8 per set) and Jenn Clayton performed well both on defence (15 digs) and offense (20 kills).

Although the Eagles outperformed the Trojans in every category, unforced errors prevented the Eagles from coming away with a win, losing to SAIT 1-3. Sandra Veikle once again had a great night on defence with 27 digs (6.7 digs per set) earning her the honour of Player of the Game. Leftside player, Jenn Clayton stepped up her leadership and performance on the court with a personal best of 26 kills in a match (6.5 kills per set) and a new King’s record edging out 5th year alumni Oriana Pysyk by tying her 26 kills, but finishing first overall by averaging more kills per set.

League: MacEwan (November 26-27, 2009)

Eagles come up short against the MacEwan Griffins this weekend losing 0-3 on both nights. Coach Scott expected a lot more from her team, commenting “I thought we were ready to at least push the Griffins to four or five sets, but we played like we didn’t really believe we could win.” Player of the Game honours went to sisters, Sandra Veikle on Thursday and Sarah Veikle on Friday. Sandra, a second year libero currently leads the league in the North with 135 digs (4.5 digs per set). Sarah, a fourth year setter consistently continues to contribute to the team both offensively and defensively with 31 kills, 13 stuff blocks and 80 digs for the season.

Keyano (November 13-14, 2009)

Once again the Eagle’s come away with another split! In a heart wrenching battle in front of a home crowd on Friday night, the Eagles went to the fifth set against the Keyano Huskies. After having lost the first two sets (22-25, 25-27), the Eagles fought their way back into the match winning the next two sets (25-21, 25-17). It seemed like the momentum had finally turned the Eagle’s way, but they were unable to hold on, losing 16-18 in the final set. Outscoring the Huskies in every category 55-38 kills, 13-4 aces, 109-89 digs, 9-3 stuff blocks, it was a disappointing loss for the Eagles as a win on Friday would have put them in a three-way tie for third in the North. As it stands now, the Eagle’s sit in fifth place. Player of the Game on Friday went to first year leftside, #3 Lisa Stiksma who led both teams with a total of 14 kills.

Saturday’s match was significantly better with the Eagles winning 3-0 (25-20, 32-30, 25-21). Player of the Game went to second year right side #12 Jenn Clayton who had the most kills on either team with 14. Jenn also led the team with 2 aces and 3 stuff blocks.

The Eagles’ next league games are against MacEwan, November 19-20.

League: Grande Prairie (November 6-7, 2009)

The Eagle’s went into this weekend knowing that they would have to play well to defeat the Wolves, but a lack of mental focus both on defence and offence led to their downfall on Friday night. Just as the Eagles were starting to gain momentum leading the Wolves for most of the third set, they were ultimately unable to close the game, resulting in a 0-3 loss (13-25, 19-25, 23-25). Player of the Game went to second year Right Side, #12 Jenn Clayton.

During the opening set on Saturday, it at first looked like the Eagles were destined to a similar fate to Friday. They were definitely playing better defence, but their attack simply could not keep up to that of the Wolves, losing the first set 19-25. Suddenly, the Eagles seemed to find the updraft they needed to enable them to soar through the second and third sets, winning 26-24 and 25-22. The fourth set was all Wolves (16-25) as the Eagles really struggled to get an attack going with only 3 kills compared to the Wolves 14 kills. But the Eagles were not finished yet and proved that this young squad has matured significantly in the last few weeks. With the point spread in the final set never going beyond two points, the Eagles battled the Wolves to a 21-19 finish! Two first year players had personal bests with Aleena Forstey accumulating 12 kills and Lisa Sticksma had 14 kills and received the honour of Player of the Game.

The Eagles’ next league games are at home against Keyano College, November 13-14.

League: NAIT (October 16-17, 2009)

The season opener against NAIT Ooks on Friday night started off extremely well for the Eagles as they defeated the Ooks 3-1 (25-16, 28-30, 25-21, 25-23). Top scorers for the Eagles were #12 Jenn Clayton and #2 Melanie Reize. Jenn Clayton also received Player of the Game with 11 kills, 1 stuff block and 14 digs.

Unfortunately, the Eagles did not come out with the same fire on Saturday night as the NAIT Ooks pulled out a nail biter first set 28-26, and never looked back to defeat the Eagles 25-21, 25-19 in the next two sets. #12 Jenn Clayton once again received the Player of the Game with 8 kills and 1 stuff block.

Pre-Season Tournament at Grant MacEwan (October 9-11, 2009)

The tournament at Grant MacEwan this weekend was a great opportunity for the Eagles to get in a few more games before league starts in mid-October. Their first match on Friday was against Lakeland who they have gone back and forth with in previous encounters. This time, the match was to go in favour of the Eagles as they defeated the Rustlers 25-20, 17-25, 13-25, 34-32 and 15-12. The final game Friday evening was against Grande Prairie where the Eagles fell short losing 0-3 (22-25, 17-25, 16-25). On Saturday, the Eagles suffered two more tough losses to the MacEwan Alumni (19-25, 23-25, 25-27) and the Medicine Hat Rattlers (22-25, 18-25, 21-25). Round Robin results left the Eagles in a 3-way tie for 3rd in which they finished in 4th place. This left the Eagles playing off for 5th spot against Canadian Mennonite University from Winnipeg, losing 2-3 in the 5th set (25-15, 17-25, 20-25, 25-9 and 12-15). Overall, the women’s team tied for 7th place and will be spending the remainder of this week preparing for their season opener against NAIT on October 16th and 17th.

Pre-Season Tournament at Red Deer College

The women’s volleyball team participated in a pre-season tournament at Red Deer College this past weekend (October 2-3, 2009), where they finished in the top four. The Eagles started off well on Friday, defeating Olds College 2-1 and Assiniboine College from Brandon, Manitoba 2-0. Their winning streak continued on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Lakeland College from Lloydminster. The final match of the round robin was against the Red Deer College Alumni where the Eagles came up short, losing in the third set. Even with this loss, the Eagles managed to come away from round robin play with a first place finish by coming out on top of a three way tie. As a result, the Eagles received a bye to the semi final against Lakeland. They fought hard against the Lakeland Wrustlers defeating them 25-18 in the first set, losing 23-25 in the second and 13-15 in the third. Overall, it was a great learning weekend for the Eagle’s squad, who look forward to their final pre-season tournament this weekend at Grant MacEwan.
