With a 5-2-3 record in their regular season, the women’s futsal team found themselves off to compete in the ACAC provincial championship, held at Lethbridge College between March 15-17.

Head Coach Rick Haxby and team captains Katelyn Hehn and Alex Velsink confidently led the team into provincials.

Haxby says, “We’ve had an excellent season. I’m really pleased with the effort and progress this team has made since the start of the year. The first year players have fit right in and the returning players have shown great leadership.”

The Eagles started their run at provincials with a very close game against the Medicine Hat College Ratlers, just squeaking out a 4-3 win. After being tied at half, the Eagles kept up the pressure to ensure their tournament started off with a win.

The Eagles fell to Keyano College but beat off Olds College in a close 6-5 win to secure a spot in semi-finals.

In a nail-biting semi-final game against the SAIT Trojans, the Eagles scored with under a minute of play left in the game to tie up the score 5-5. They scored again in the very last second of the match to clinch a 6-5 win.

The Eagles would swallow a hard 1-3 loss to Ambrose in the finals but earned a silver medal in the process - a first for the futsal program at King’s.

“I am so proud of every single one of my teammates for working hard each game and continuously not giving up. We were definitely seen as the underdogs in provincials but proved everyone wrong! We took the games one at a time and overall worked together to get our silver medal,” says Kaylee Croft, proudly. Kaylee was named player of the game in the final match of the tournament.

Taylor Hrycun, who was named tournament all-star, adds, “No matter what happened throughout the season, we never stopped believing in each other. Our coach believed in us right from the beginning but also demanded more of us when he believed necessary. We went into provincials with high hopes and never gave up on each other. Our silver medal is definitely a proud accomplishment.”

King’s joined the ACAC futsal league in the 2016/2017 season.
