Eagles women’s volleyball sweeps ACAC provincial championship
Rolling right along in their season, King’s women’s volleyball team confidently entered and took first place in the ACAC Provincial Championship.
With an 11-1 finish and five game win streak in the regular season, the women had had their sights set on provincials, held on February 21 to 23 at Ambrose University (Calgary, AB), for quite some time.
Coming in with a winning mentality got the women off to a strong start, winning their first game 3-1 after long, competitive sets. Their next two games were equally intense back-and-forth matches, but the Eagles managed to win both 3-0.
In a news release, the ACAC described “the pure power of King’s,” saying that other teams just “couldn’t stop the Eagles’ momentum.”
“Our team thoroughly prepared for this weekend. We were incredibly excited to trust our skill and focus on our own side of the court,” says team captain Sydney Warchola.
Not only did the women bring home King’s Athletics program’s first conference championship gold medal and banner, the women and their coach also swept at the awards presentation. Jayden Bontkes (left side), Sydney Warchola (middle), Jada Lea (setter), and Tracy Ewashkiw (libero) all took home an All-Conference award and Head Coach Grace Scott was awarded ACAC North Coach of the Year.
“We are so grateful for the continual support that our King’s community has offered,” says co-captain, Avery Theune. “We would never have had the same outcomes without the love and joy for our team that those around us have shown.”
The Eagles women’s volleyball team now has their sights set on the CCAA National Championship, and eagerly await the schedule to be released. Nationals take place from March 7 to 10 at Niagara College (Welland, ON).
