Does working in a beautiful park setting sound perfect for you?  Information Officers work as a team to ensure every visitor to our provincial parks leaves a happy camper.  From registering campers and explaining park regulations to selling retail items and helping to plan a family trip, each day in the role of an Information Officer will bring something different.  The following positions complete these tasks and more while moving between the campground registration booth and the Park Information Centre (including gift shop).

Information Officers (IOs) are the first point of contact for visitors to provincial park campgrounds. The role creates a positive experience for visitors by providing useful and timely information around park activities, rules and regulations, and nearby amenities. With a focus on front-line customer service, cash handling, and administration, this seasonal position is perfect for people who are interested in gaining administrative and retail experience in a unique setting.

The Lead Information Officer (LIO) oversees the IO staff team of 3-4 and the day-to-day operations in the Booth and Park Centre. This position is a front-line customer service role that focuses on higher level administrative and leadership tasks such as scheduling, staff training, inventory management, cash reconciliation, and reporting.

Type: Seasonal (Up to 40 hours/week)

Rate of Pay: $19.20-$23.37/hr Information Officer and $21.14-$25.83/hr Lead Information Officer
(Plus 11.2% in lieu of benefits and holidays)
Closing Date: February 23, 2020

Responsibilities

Booth & Retail Operations

      • Provide exceptional customer service as the first point of contact for day users and overnight campers
      • Understand reserve.albertaparks.ca functions to register campers, update visitor information, and process payments or refunds using the system
      • Operate cash register and point of sale system
      • Daily opening tasks, closing tasks and ensuring locations are open to the public during scheduled hours of operation
      • Participate in all required campground operations, including camper compliance, group unit counts, and daily cleaning
      • Proactively keep store inventory and shelving clean, stocked, and faced
      • Take stock of inventory and communicate inventory needs in a timely manner
      • Keep a clean & organized workspace at all times, with relevant resources stocked and ready to use
      • Receive, respond to, and follow up with customer complaints
      • Provide on-site visitor concern management, troubleshooting, and reporting
      • Learn emergency protocols to provide support to visitors in an emergency situation

Administrative Duties

      • Learn and adhere to all pertinent policies, procedures, and protocols, including OHS, campground regulations, and GOA directives
      • Follow proper paperwork procedures to ensure consistency
      • Review and reconcile camping and retail sales revenue for daily cash-outs
      • Record and organize statistics for public visitation and demographics when required

Education & Information Services

      • Respond to in-person and telephone/email requests for information on area amenities and recreational activities near the Camrose District’s Natural Areas, Provincial Recreation Areas and Provincial Parks.
      • Advise the public of the various rules, policies, and regulations that apply within a Provincial Park
      • Stay up-to-date on relevant activities, opportunities, and conditions (trails, water, fishing, etc.) to provide to the public
      • Plan and deliver activities to support special events (such as Parks Day)

In addition to the above duties, the Lead Information Officer will be responsible to:

    • Ensure IOs receive appropriate training for booth operations, reservation system, and GOA processes
    • Empower IOs to be independent in their roles by setting clear expectations and processes for decision-making
    • Provide ongoing support to IOs through regular check-ins on progress and one-on-one training
    • Provide constructive feedback to IOs, and supervisor to improve performance or procedures
    • Create and foster an inclusive, positive work environment for all staff and visitors
    • Coordinate day-to-day tasks of the team and ensure daily procedures are followed
    • Maintain open communication with other program areas to ensure visitors’ needs are met
    • Review and reconcile camping and retail sales revenue for all IOs before submission deadlines
    • Manage retail sales, orders, inventory, and stock by maintaining contact with external vendors
    • Liaise with local visitor information centres and community groups to ensure availability of promotional and tourism materials
    • Manage day-to-day schedule changes
    • Review staff timesheets for accuracy before submitting
    • Manage special projects and deadlines

Qualifications

Requirements

      • High school diploma plus one year related experience in administration, retail, tourism, customer service, etc.
      • English language proficiency
      • Available to work weekend and evening shifts during the season
      • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Publisher)
      • Cash-handling experience
      • Alignment with the required behavioural competencies or the role (see below)

In addition, the Lead must also have:

    • Previous supervisory/leadership experience

Assets

 

  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Second language proficiency
  • Experience with Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca
  • Familiarity with Park – Miquelon Lake
  • Familiarity with till and debit/credit machine processes
  • Available to attend the mandatory training program (late April/early May)

Terms of Employment

    • Fulfill seasonal contract (anticipated late April – September/October)
    • Evening, weekend and shift work will be required. A premium is paid for these shifts
    • Access to reliable transportation to and from place of work
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
    • Final Candidates may be required to provide a Criminal Records Check and a driver's abstract.  Will be reimbursed.
    • Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C"/AED Certificate
    • Adherence to Alberta Parks Uniform Policy
    • These positions may require some outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions

    • Interviews will take place late February - early March

    • Hours of employment are up to 40 hours per week, with shifts scheduled up to 8 hours per day
