Recreation Technician I, Greening Program Assistant (Root for Trees)

The Greening Program Assistant runs scheduled events with ease, applying their technical and interpersonal skills to direct and engage a variety of small and large volunteer groups. Spend your summer outside supporting the Root for Trees Initiative, as well as other beautification
programs. Some duties include: promoting and marketing the programs, coordinating planting materials and volunteers, and presenting programs to the public. You will succeed in this role if you are a quick and passionate learner, and have excellent time management and organizational skills.
Some of your duties on the path to shaping the way we grow include:

      
● Support the Program Supervisor and Community Greening Coordinator in the Roots for Trees Initiative
● Facilitate volunteer planting shifts and deliver quality educational programming and activities to audiences of diverse ages,
understanding, backgrounds and capabilities, such as citizens, community groups, corporations etc.
● Communicate and confirm upcoming planting shift logistics with volunteer groups by telephone and email
● Assist with the following technical and operational aspects of the Roots for Trees Initiative, including: completing required paperwork, preparing and transporting plant stock, shovels and gloves, preparing the planting site through accurate mapping and staking, tracking plant material usage and participant attendance, identifying weeds, native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, conducting plant health
surveys and supporting other program needs a required
● Maintain materials, equipment and vehicles used for program and event delivery
● Ensure volunteer work during planting shifts and special events is completed on time and safely
● Conduct field level hazard assessments at planting locations and deliver tailored safety talks and planting demonstrations to volunteer groups
● Research content for educational activities, promotional material, websites and social media
● Assist with program and special event promotions using online and print media
● Assist Program Supervisor and Community Greening Coordinator with special event logistics and implementation
● Other related duties as required


Qualifications :
● Completion of Grade 12; degree and/or diploma program in forestry, agriculture, horticulture, botany, biological sciences, recreation,
education or related field is an asset
● Experience delivering educational and/or recreational programs to a variety of audiences
● Experience coordinating and working with volunteers
● Experience in promoting and delivering programs is an asset
● Plant identification skills and experience in horticulture or plant care is an asset
● Experience driving a truck and trailer is an asset
● Physically fit and able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including repetitive, daily manual labour of loading plant stock into the truck box/trailer and planting trees in rugged terrain and variable weather/environmental
● Possession of valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position
● Experience using Google Applications
● Strong written, oral, presentation and web-based communication skills
● Ability to work independently and in a team environment
● Strong time management and organization skills
● Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
● Successful candidates must arrange their own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require business automotive insurance coverage
● Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Up to 4 temporary full-time positions for up to 6 months in duration, with the possibility of being extended up to 9 months
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, from April to October with the possibility of being extended up to 9 months. Shifts are variable throughout the week, including regular weekend, afternoon and evening work depending on operational requirements.
Salary: $18.067 - $22.361 (Hourly)
