Drafting Technician Summer Student (Canada Summer Jobs)

1 temporary full-time position for up to 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in an engineering technology, drafting technology, engineering,
geographic information systems (GIS) or related post-secondary diploma or degree program, commencing in May 2021
As the City of Edmonton grows to 2.1 million by 2050, we are looking to continually build, revitalize and innovate our open spaces and we are looking for a Drafting
Technician Summer Student to help us determine the location of underground utility assets in a collection of City of Edmonton parks.
With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:
● Connect with various groups within the City and utility companies to source information, such as, as-built drawings, locations, and maintenance history.
● Organize meetings with other groups in the City to explore if they have utility asset information, and what format their current information is in (including drawings, manuals, technical information, specifications, etc.)
● Create spreadsheet with links to asset databases
● Create repository of asset information that does not exist elsewhere in the system
● Create repository of applicable policies and regulations, such as PCB regulation for oil-filled equipment
● Review and analyze files found to develop up to date drafts of utility asset locations using ArcCollector and ArcPro
● Complete field site visits to compare drafts with surface utility discrepancies and highlight any discrepancies
● Undertake project work, under supervision, relating to asset management and data analysis or other related areas
● Coordinate and assist the team to collect and conduct data analysis
● Other related duties as required
Note: This position will be a combination of working from home and on-site working conditions. Working conditions will follow the Government of Alberta Health recommendations
● Currently enrolled in an engineering technology, drafting technology, engineering, geographic information systems (GIS) or related post-secondary
diploma or degree program
● Familiarity with reading and interpreting underground utility drawings, site plans, applicable legislation, and regulatory requirements
● Familiarity with utility equipment attributes and specifications
● Demonstrated ability using Google Workspace applications
● Coursework, training and/or experience in GIS software is an asset
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strong working relationships
● Ability to conduct research using various methodologies and provide detailed analysis of information
● Excellent organizational and time management skills
● Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange their own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of
Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
● Access to reliable internet while working from home

Note: This position may be partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program provided by Service Canada.
● Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:
