The Department of Chemical Engineering counts 28 professors performing research in collaboration with industry, in the fields of process and reactor engineering, life-cycle analysis, biorefining, tissue engineering, materials science and biomaterials, regenerative medicine, biotechnology and polymer science. Close to a quarter of the faculty conduct research in biomedical engineering, making it a major departmental interest.
The Department is one of Polytechnique Montréal’s most proactive through its teaching innovations and the development of new knowledge transfer techniques. The position falls within the Department of Chemical Engineering’s strategic development objective to increase its research activities related to the Fondation Familliale Jacques L’Écuyer Philanthropic Chair in Materials Engineering. The Chair supports research activities in the processing aspects of materials, metals, mine tailings, industrial waste, and battery recycling (thermodynamics, kinetics/diffusion, experimentation, modeling and design).
The selected candidate will benefit from the dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment afforded by the research centers related to the Philanthropic Chair:

  • Center for Research in Computational Thermochemistry: The CRCT has contributed to the scientific and industrial applications of chemical thermodynamics for more than 35 years. Its contribution to the development of thermodynamic models is recognized worldwide as the developer of the FactSage Software.
  • Centre for Characterization and Microscopy of Materials (CM)2: is active in the fields of composite materials and powder metallurgy. The (CM)2 is equipped with the finest characterization equipment permitting the development of new techniques to support world-class research.

This dynamic environment, along with our attractive and competitive support of new professors, favours the rapid development of innovative research activities for new professors.
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the duties of the position with a dynamic and creative approach. In particular, they will:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Be able to teach one of the 4 graduate materials science program foundational courses (Structure and properties of materials, Thermodynamics of materials, Kinetics in materials or Materials Characterisation);
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Carry out innovative research projects;
  • Obtain grants and contracts to train highly qualified personnel through research work;
  • Publish the scientific results of their research;
  • Participate in the Department’s teaching and research activities;
  • Collaborate with other research teams within Polytechnique Montréal or with other institutions;
  • Contribute to the influence of Polytechnique Montréal in Québec and internationally.

The Department is seeking a professor specializing in at least one of the following area:

  • Fundamentals and processes of recycling of materials, metals and alloys;
  • Pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy (thermodynamics, kinetics and diffusion);
  • Any other promising area of chemical engineering that has synergy within our Department.
    We are seeking candidates whose research activities can favourably integrate into departmental research activities, in particular those of the Center for Research in Computational Thermochemistry (CRCT). Research in a promising field of emerging technology will also be considered favorably.

The preference is for the candidate to join the Department before the end of 2021.
The successful candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in materials science, chemical engineering, engineering physics, or any other field pertinent to the areas of expertise described above.
The successful candidate will be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or will take the necessary steps to register prior to applying for tenure. Candidates must demonstrate excellent research and teaching skills. Relevant industrial experience is an asset. Given that the language of instruction is French, the successful candidate will be fluent in French, both spoken and written, before applying for tenure. Polytechnique Montréal will provide assistance and support for the successful candidate to become a registered member of the OIQ, and to learn French.

This faculty position is tenure-track. Salary and benefits are set in accordance with the collective agreement in effect. The latter includes arrangements for work-life balance and offers maternity, paternity and adoption leaves in addition to the Québec Parental Insurance Plan.
