Applications are invited for the position of Program Medical Director, Laboratory Medicine Program, at the University Health Network. The anticipated start date is January 2022 or shortly thereafter.
University Health Network (UHN) is Canada’s leading Academic Health Sciences Center, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Located in downtown Toronto, University Health Network has four clinical sites – Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, as well as its own integrated Health Sciences School – the Michener Institute of Education at UHN and seven Research Institutes. UHN has extensive primary & community care services and provides secondary through quaternary care for Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. University Health Network hosts approximately 1,183,968 ambulatory visits, and cares for over 42,260 inpatients in more than 1250 beds.
The Laboratory Medicine Program (LMP) at UHN is Canada’s largest hospital diagnostic laboratory and one of the largest academic laboratories in the world. LMP comprises anatomic pathology, cytopathology, clinical laboratory genetics, hematopathology, transfusion medicine, biochemistry, histocompatibility and immunogenetics, which enables seamless integration of diagnostics. The LMP is seeking a proven academic laboratory medicine clinician who is energetic and visionary to lead the program and its vibrant translational research programs, teaching and education programs and enhance its national and international partnerships. The Program Medical Director (PMD) will lead the integration of lab diagnostic testing and develop a high quality academic lab that will enhance UHN as a global leader in precision medicine. As PMD, you will build on the LMP’s commitment to quality and on the accomplishments of the LMP which is made up of over 70 medical and scientific staff, and over 400 medical laboratory technologists, technicians, phlebotomists, pathologists’ assistants and more. Together they serve over 1,300 patients per day.
Supporting UHN’s Purpose, Values and Principles, the successful candidate must be committed to transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning. Together with the LMP Executive Director and LMP Executive Team, the PMD will have a shared responsibility for ensuring that clinical and financial targets are accomplished. This position also anticipates the selected candidate will be eligible to hold a full-time academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology, University of Toronto. The University of Toronto is Canada’s largest university, recognized as a global leader in research and teaching. You hold an MD and FRCPC (or equivalent) or PhD with appropriate certification in any discipline of Laboratory Medicine. If an MD you must have, or are eligible for, licensure in Ontario with the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
The Program seeks an outstanding academic with demonstrated leadership skills and experience with a commitment to excellence in clinical care, quality improvement, education, and research while fostering a professional culture of inclusion and integrity. While this role is based at the University Health Network, this individual will foster partnerships and collaboration with other departments at UHN, other University of Toronto affiliated hospitals, the University of Toronto, and other aspects of the health care system. The successful candidate will have a personal record of excellence in scholarly accomplishment and leadership in research and education. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in inter-professional collaboration with other health care disciplines. This full time, permanent position’s salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Estimated compensation will be in the range of $150,000-$450,000.
