Manager of Volunteer Services and Events (Permanent, Full-Time)


Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the permanent full-time position of Manager of Volunteer Services and Events. This position is responsible for overseeing the recruitment, screening, selection, training, motivation, and evaluation of Bissell Centre’s volunteer program within a multitude of placement opportunities currently offered.  This position is also responsible for key community and fundraising events that take place throughout the year. These events vary from small Bissell internal or client-only events to large scale community/public events.

The best candidate for this role will be an energetic collaborator who is highly productive and has a positive attitude. The successful candidate will be a friendly team-player who understands the importance of relationships and is able to multi-task a variety of overlapping priorities. This role works as part of the Resource Development team, where a good sense of humour and an interest in snack foods are extremely important.

Position details:

  • 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
  • Flexibility of the working day is inherent in the position
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and the occasional statutory holiday is required

 

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of an annual operational plan including goals, objectives, and timelines
  • Provide supervision of the Volunteer Services and Events Coordinator and additional staff as required for seasonal support
  • Assess the need for volunteers to enhance program/service delivery to meet needs of all programs and services and identify volunteer assignments that provide meaningful work
  • Develop all volunteer positions and oversee the creation of descriptions, training information, handbooks, and orientation materials in order to provide clear expectations to volunteers and staff
  • Develop and implement effective volunteer recruitment strategies, screening and onboarding processes, and recognition and stewardship opportunities
  • Manage and implement the practicum placement program for students from various programs and institutions including placement of students and training of supervisory staff
  • Lead and support the planning and execution of agency-wide internal and external community based and fundraising events
  • Overall management of volunteer database (Volgistics)
  • Plan communication strategies (thank yous, new volunteer opportunities, updates, surveys) to existing/prospective volunteers
  • Create and maintain annual department budgets and submit monthly program reports

 

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:  


Education/Experience:

  • Degree in a related field and/or Diploma in Volunteer Management, special event planning or equivalent preferred, but not required
  • A minimum of 2 years proven experience in recruiting, screening, placing and motivating volunteers and/or staff
  • A minimum of 1-2 years experience in coordinating and executing community and/or large-scale public events

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current trends, resources, management and information of volunteerism
  • Familiar with and skilled in Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Experience with databases/data entry, online research and advertising, website management                 and other volunteer program software an asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Result-oriented with strong organizational, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core an asset

  • Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check
  • Driver’s Abstract
