Personal Support Worker (PSW) Hope Terrace; FASD Permanent Supportive Housing Program

Bissell Centre is growing and in need of a passionate and skilled PSW. The PSW works with adults who are diagnosed with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) as well as co-occurring mental health and addictions to support home stability and goal achievement through a client centered, FASD Informed and harm reduction approach. The PSW acts as a broker between residents and resources to enhance the resident’s self-reliance within their home and community. Due to the nature of the position, the PSW will occasionally experience physical and/or verbal abuse from and between participants.
This position requires individuals who are willing to work on a 365 24/7 rotating shift rotation (4-3-4-2) which includes holidays, evenings, nights and weekends. Individuals must have the ability to respond quickly to individuals in crisis.
Specific responsibilities of the position include:
- Enhance, collaborate and support the work of the on-site occupational therapist in completing the daily living skills bootcamp
- Manage a shared caseload
- Provide minimal outreach capabilities to assist with community integration and attending important appointments
- Accurately complete ongoing Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool’s (SPDAT) and provincial interviews
- Identify participant strength’s, resources, needs and aspirations in order to provide greater opportunities for enhanced support
- Work with participants regularly to collaboratively set goals, develop a plan of action, evaluate success, and revise plan accordingly
- Complete regular home visits to create organic relationships between staff and participants
- Assist participants through role-modeling, teaching, information, brokering, advocacy, and providing practical assistance
- Provide group programming such as collective kitchen and open recreation within the building to build upon participants meaningful daily activities
- Administer the medication assist program, managed alcohol program and needle exchange within the building
- Complete regular building rounds throughout the day and night
- Assist participants in pest control, hygiene management, apartment maintenance, and daily living skills
- Provide overdose prevention education as well as administer naloxone, when necessary
- Provide advocacy for and with the participants by assisting with appointment remainders, scheduling and cancelling appointments, assist with navigating social service systems and the like
- Be an active member in the building to provide de-escalation, resident/roommate mediation and the like
- Contribute to the cleanliness of the office and all common space within the building
The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
- Degree or Diploma in Social Science or related discipline
- Minimum of one-year related employment experience e.g. high-risk populations, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Supportive Housing Experience
- Experience with case management software is a considerable asset
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational, problem-solving, reliable and advocacy skills
- Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
- Familiarity working with high risk populations and an understanding of Aboriginal cultures, history and current issues
- In-depth knowledge of Harm Reduction Philosophies, FASD Informed approach, Client-Centered approach, Trauma Informed Practice will be considered an asset
- Strong active listening skills will be considered an asset
