Community Inclusion Facilitator

Edmonton, Alberta

(Located in West Edmonton)

We are seeking an active, enthusiastic individual to support our 24-year-old son who has developmental disabilities roughly 15-20 hours per week.

Reporting directly to the family, the Inclusion Support Worker is responsible for providing support in a manner that builds meaningful relationships and focuses on strengths to enable him to be a valued, contributing member of the community.

Our son is an active, outgoing young man who sees life with a “glass-half-full” attitude. The primary responsibility of the support worker is to enhance his meaningful participation in community and facilitate community connections.

Key Responsibilities:

Relationship building

  • Assist with connecting with friends by organizing getting togethers, arranging transportation
  • Model social skills to build relationships and friendships (facebook, texting etc)

Community engagement

  • Assist our son to identify and to be involved in the community that are of interest to him (recreational, events, etc.)
  • Facilitate our son’s belonging and membership in community activities that he enjoys

Employment supports

  • Assist with building relationships with his coworkers at work
  • On occasion you will be required to provide transportation to and from his place of employment

Support for living and personal management

  • Encourage and influence a healthy lifestyle i.e. promote healthy eating and exercise
  • Assist with planning meals and meal preparation
  • Provide transportation to and from activities

Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities using a positive, strength-based, wellness approach
  2. A steadfast belief and commitment to inclusion, the right for all people to belong, participate and contribute to the community
  3. Calm disposition and sense of humor; displays positive mood at work
  4. Active and enthusiastic lifestyle (enjoys sports, music, working out, cooking, going to events)
  5. Recognizes that the needs of our son are of top priority in any situation
  6. Works independently in unstructured environments, taking initiative, employing effective time management skills, and being on time
  7. Coaching skills – knowledge of and ability to demonstrate and support the development of skills as they relate to social participation
  8. Must be reliable
  9. A valid Class 5 driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle
  10. Police and Intervention Checks
