Numeracy / Math Adult Education Instructor: Contract Position


Key Responsibilities:
Instructors plan lessons based on topics and materials of interest and relevance to help adult literacy
students develop improve reading, writing as well as numeracy/math skills. Instructors lead group work, assist students individually, provide feedback, and offer guidance for class tutors. Instructors must also integrate Essential Skills into program delivery through the development of knowledge and skills for everyday living, further learning or education, self-expression and occupation. The goal is to help students develop critical-thinking abilities by gaining an understanding of mathematical concepts.

Instructors will encourage and support active student involvement, helping students develop (as
applicable):
 Oral communication skills; includes listening, speaking to groups and in public settings
 Personal and interpersonal skills for self-direction and working in groups
 Competency with math concepts, operations and applications (adding, subtracting, fractions, etc.
applied to everyday uses)
 Computer and associated digital skills
Instructor will also:
 Help to ensure that student participation and relationships among students, tutors, and staff reflect
the mission, philosophy and principles of the Association
 Encourage and support student involvement in all aspects of programming and Association
operations
 Facilitate/participate in learning groups or in tutor training as required
 Maintain records and statistics for internal and external reporting as well as evaluation
 Submit brief written reports as required


Qualifications:
 Knowledge and skills relevant to helping adults develop math, digital and essential skills
 Knowledge and understanding of community orientated education, particularly in relation to adult
numeracy and literacy education
 Related certification or degree from post-secondary institution or equivalent experience
 Experience working with adult students
 Knowledge or numeracy development
 Ability to work respectfully with people of various cultures and backgrounds
 Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of essential skills

Conditions of contract:
 Hours; as determined upon consultation with successful candidate
 Rate: As per the Associations pay scale/ contract agreement
 Reports to the Executive Director and Coordinators
