The Mustard Seed - Employment Coach

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community,
grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the
community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British
Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard
Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and
employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

The Employment Coach is a city - wide leader in supporting individuals experiencing barriers to
be employed in Edmonton to finding and keeping sustainable employment. The Employment
Coach works collaboratively with other members of the Support Services team, employers and
other Mustard Seed departments as well as external agencies to break the stigmas of
homelessness and help community participants achieve their employment goals. The
Employment Coach is an exceptional liaison to employers, is effective in uncovering
employment opportunities and excels at providing front - end and follow - up support to
community participants. When applicable, the Employment Coach connects participants to
other agencies for appropriate support.


  • Effectively and competently use the Supported Employment model to move community
    participants towards The Mustard Seed’s employment initiatives
  • Perform intakes and assessments for the Employment Program
  • Weekly visits to The Mustard Seed’s drop - ins for client interaction and appointment set
    - up
  • Create quality resume and cover letters, explore career paths with participants, generate
    goals and help individuals achieve it, help participants on job searching and prepare
    them for interviews
  • Link participants to potential employers
  • Maintain and update weighted caseload systems for all clients in the Employment
  • Have two (2) one –on one coach meeting per month with each participant on your case
  • Set personal, financial and employment goals with Community Participants and review it
  • Document all community participant interactions and progress
  • Seek out community resources and build community partnerships
  • Work collaboratively with other Mustard Seed programs as well as external agencies and
    refer community participants to their case managers when needed
  • Connect regularly with existing employers to advocate for clients and foster relationships
  • Seek new business partners willing to employ our participants
  • Alongside the Employment Manager, explore and pursue new opportunities and
    contracts for Seedworks social enterprises
  • Seed Academy: This includes but is not limited to: participant recruitment, creation of
    materials needed for the employment workshop and facilitate workshops
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK, NVCI)
  • Attend weekly general meetings and monthly support meetings with Manager
  • Other duties as required


  • You must be team oriented and eager to foster collaboration and synergy with other team
    members and external contacts
  • You must enjoy helping people overcome challenges while maintaining a hope - filled
  • You must be willing to advocate for the marginalized and to challenge common
    perceptions of poverty and/or homelessness in order to foster change
  • You must be a self - starter and thrive in a highly mobile environment
  • You must thrive within a results ‐ driven, progressive not ‐ for ‐ profit organization


  • Strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office Programs
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • A self - starter with the ability to work in a cross - functional team
  • Ability to accomplish goals with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Eager to take initiative in developing new relationships with potential employers
  • Experience facilitating employment related workshops to various age and learning levels
    and diverse audiences is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of FOIP and ability to observe confidentiality standards


  • Combination of community hubs, classroom, and office setting with approximately 20%
    of time spent in the field
  • Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)
  • Reliable vehicle required (Parking provided, mileage reimbursement) and proof of 2 -
    million liability insurance
  • Working in and amongst a diverse group of individuals
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment
  • Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check is required
