Thrift Store Supervisor

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community,
grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the
community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British
Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard
Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and
employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Reporting to the Manager of Employment & Immigrant Services, the Thrift Store Supervisor is
responsible for the overall operations of the thrift store. The supervisor will provide direction
and leadership to staff, manage the store finances, establish donor relationships, and provide
front-line customer service. The supervisor is accountable for developing new and creative
methods to meet sales, donations, and employee goals.
As a part of the Employment Program, one of the primary goals of the thrift store is to provide a
healthy and supportive workplace, while promoting reintegration and skill development of staff.
The Thrift Store Supervisor will also act as coach to support staff to set professional and
personal goals.


  • Select, train, schedule, and coach thrift store staff
  • Act as the liaison between the community and the thrift store
  • Make merchandising, pricing, and store layout decisions
  • Establish new partnerships and promote The Mustard Seed as a top destination for
  • Coordinate events and marketing efforts to promote the Thrift Store to potential
    customers and donors
  • Exemplify quality service to customers and donors
  • Process payment transactions and manage inventory
  • Handle all cash audits, deposits, payables, and financial reporting
  • Provide monthly reports for the Manager of Employment & Immigrant Services
  • Engage volunteers to grow and develop the thrift store


  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a retail sales or customer service role is required
  • Supervisory experience is required and previous employment coaching experience is an
  • Sales and marketing experience, including cold calling is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and leadership skills
  • Skilled at conflict resolution and de - escalation
  • Empathetic towards, and ability to communicate and support individuals facing mental
    health, addictions, chronic illness, homelessness, poverty and related challenges


  • Full-time position 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends will be required
  • Access to a personal vehicle with $2 million liability insurance and a valid class 5 driver’s
    license are required
  • A clear Driver’s Abstract is required prior to offer of employment
  • Store environment with office time. Travel between locations is required
  • Physical effort is moderate and must be able to lift 50 lbs routinely. Must be able to walk
    upstairs, load and sort merchandise as required
  • This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond
    appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with
    individuals with barriers
  • Employment Security Check is required
