A Family Group Conference (FGC) is a mediated formal meeting between family members and professionals such as social workers, counsellors, teachers and other community members concerned with the care and protection of a child or adolescent and intending to keep the child out of the care of CFS. The meetings are facilitated and co-ordinated by WJS staff as impartial representatives and independent of the family’s Children and Family Services casework decisions. At The Family Group Conference, parents and extended family members are helped in making decisions about the best way to support the family and care for the child. The child’s family, support worker and professional practitioners work closely together to make decisions that best meet the needs of the child.
Family Group Conferencing is a four step process including:
1. A meeting during which professionals inform the family of the concerns they have.
2. Private time alone allowing the family to develop a plan that addresses the concerns that have been raised.
3. Presentation of the plan to the professionals for support that will be provided if the concerns have been addressed in a way that does not put the child at risk.
4. WJS staff and parents work together to agree on a plan to achieve what the family intends to accomplish.
Parents are part of an ongoing process that makes and modifies decisions to protect and ensure the safety of their children. Parent participation is key to making well-informed decisions that help children to feel secure and have a sense of belonging
The Family Group Conferencing (FCG) Facilitator co-ordinates and organizes all aspects of family group conferences to ensure the conference process supports the strength and integrity of family groups, functions appropriately and within the cultural framework of each site, and the program’s philosophy and standards are maintained. Facilitators ensure concerns that relate to protection and safety are articulated and effectively examined throughout all aspects of the FGC process. This position reports to the program manager/lead practice specialist.
In Your Role You Will
• Administer and manage all aspects of the project at local sites and participate as a member of the overall family management team, including project evaluation.
• As assigned by Lead Practice Specialist, manage families referred to the family group conference process and assist them in developing a plan.
• Identify extended family members to be included and prepare them for the conference process.
• Prepare professional and other family support persons for the conference.
• Convene, facilitate and track all family group conferences.
• Address issues that arise in conjunction with the Case Manager(s) and Lead Practice Specialist.
• Complete review meetings as required (approx. 1 per month)
• Prepare and submit reports that meet program specifications and deadlines.
• Work professionally and remain neutral with all family members involved.
• Accommodate and respect family culture, social and religious heritage.
• Follow policies and procedures that relate to abuse and report safety concerns to program supervisor.
• May be required to perform family search and engagement functions that include locating, engaging, connecting and supporting potential family placement options for youth.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
• Diploma in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood or related Social Sciences, Human Services or an equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years working with families in a human or family services field.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (not GDL), reliable vehicle, appropriate insurance, and clean driver abstract
• Strong understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
• Knowledge of child development, positive discipline strategies and family dynamics.
• Understanding of approaches for community development as well as accessing community resources.
• Ability to collaborate toward cooperative work environments, foster good relationships with support networks, external agencies and community resources.
• Valid CPR/First Aid and Suicide Intervention training
• Knowledge of aboriginal culture is an asset; cultural sensitivity and solution focused training an asset.
