The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. The Mustard Seed provides basic services—food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Community Programs Manager, the Shelter Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and operation of an overnight respite program, on the south side of Edmonton, for up to 40 adults. The Supervisor fulfills the mission of The Mustard Seed’s Ministry by maintaining a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community participants and visitors. The Supervisor schedules staff and volunteers and coordinates resources ensuring the provision of a warm, safe, clean space.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide leadership to the Shelter Team, volunteers and community

• Motivate team members on a daily basis—create an environment oriented to open communication, creative thinking and cohesive team effort.

• Motivate and inspire team members to maintain focus and intervene when necessary to aid in resolving issues

• Schedule Shelter Staff and Volunteers; coordinate resources needed to provide sleeping space

• Ensure provision of a warm, safe space for respite for up to 40 adults

• Arrange daily maintenance of area—ensure the facility is kept clean and in good repair

• Build trusting relationships by acting with integrity, courtesy and responsibility

• Train, supervise, and mentor employees and volunteers

• Provide feedback and encouragement to Shelter Staff

• Advise Community Programs Manager regarding operational and staffing concerns

• Liaise with Neighbour Centre Staff, Church Staff and outside agencies to coordinate efforts and facilitate positive partnerships within the community

• Work closely with the Community Programs Manager to generate goals, schedules and reports

• Ensure the healthy maintenance and development of inter-departmental relationships

• Communicate with other Mustard Seed service providers to ensure resource needs are met

• Support Team Leads to enforce guest suspensions and provide crisis intervention as required

• Attend all relevant staff meetings, training and participate in planning sessions as scheduled

• Ensure delivery of incident reports and collection and reporting of statistics

 

• Prepare monthly reports to the Community Programs Manager to include statistics, concerns, successes and program updates

• Function in a fast paced environment and respond quickly to individuals in crisis, including but not limited to physical or mental health concerns

• Respond to conflicts in a healthy, respectful and safe manner

• Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers

• Refer community participants to The Mustard Seed services available in the Drop-In centres

• Communicate the story of The Mustard Seed’s ministry and community to volunteers

• Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and understand The Mustard Seed’s services and policies

• Participate in all staff training (e.g. NVCI, First Aid, SafeTALK) and attend meetings as requested

• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• 2 years of experience working as frontline support staff with a marginalized population

• Leadership experience—Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

• Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate

• A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential

• Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset

• Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills

• Knowledge of mental illness and addictions

• Customer service experience an asset

• A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team

• Desire to serve in a Christian street ministry

• Experience working with volunteers

WORKING CONDITIONS

• This is a Part-time fixed-term position with an end date of April 30, 2019

• Part administrative work and part relational work—evenings and weekend availability required (20 to 30 hours per week) from Monday through Sunday. Hours may vary depending on the needs of the Shelter and staffing availability.

• Supervise staff working evening 10 hour shifts, awake shifts, scheduled from 9pm to 7am on a 2 on/2 off rotation

• This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve

• This position requires the use of two-way radio communications and MS Office based programs

• Some travel will be required, to partnering organizations and between The Mustard Seed sites
