MUSI 337 - Elementary Music Education Methods

This course addresses practical aspects of teaching music in an elementary school setting, including pedagogical issues surrounding different current methodologies, additional focus on music learning within a Kodaly context, and the place of music within the school culture. Lab hours will focus on peer teaching activities and observation.

MUSI 338 - Secondary Music Education Methods

This course explores different approaches to music education in junior and senior high school settings, with emphasis on methods and materials for instrumental, choral, and general music classes. Pedagogical issues include the balance between aural and notational approaches to music, and the integration of performance with music theory, musicology and composition. Practical issues include curriculum development and implementation, plus the operation of a music program, including instrumentation, facilities, and music library organization. Lab hours will focus on peer teaching activities and observation.

This course is designed to assist the student and future teacher to develop the necessary skills, techniques, knowledge and teaching methods for French horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba as part of a Secondary Music Education focus.

This course is designed to assist the student and future teacher in developing the necessary skills, techniques, knowledge and teaching methods for woodwind instruments including the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and saxophone as part of a Secondary Music Education focus.

This course is designed to assist the student and future teacher in developing the necessary skills, techniques, knowledge and teaching methods for percussion instruments including the snare drum, keyboard percussion instruments, timpani, drum kit and the primary auxiliary instruments used in symphonic bands and orchestras as part of a Secondary Music Education focus.

MUSI 348 - Elementary Education Musical Instrument Techniques

This course is designed to assist the student and future teacher in developing the necessary knowledge and techniques to teach the common musical instruments found in an elementary educational setting. These instruments include recorder, ukulele, Orff instrumentarium and various percussion instruments, as part of an Elementary Music Education focus.
