Master of Social Justice – Lakehead University, Ontario

The MA Social Justice Studies is an innovative, interdisciplinary program. The program allows students to pursue a 4 FCE course based degree or, with the approval of the Social Justice Studies Committee, complete a practicum, a creative project, or a research project in lieu of the final 1 FCE of coursework. The program prepares students to work, research and advocate towards a more socially just society which values equality, solidarity and human rights and recognizes the citizenship of each human being.

Social Justice and Community Engagement (MA) – Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario

Through an applied focus on a local scale, our Master of Arts (MA) program in Social Justice and Community Engagement (SJCE) is committed to scholarship informed by critical social/environmental justice theories and approaches. We foster your ability to investigate and understand root causes and to engage in the active promotion of social/environmental justice principles and the resolution of community-level injustices.

Social Justice and International Studies in Education – University of Alberta, Alberta

Social Justice and International Studies in Education (SJI) is a specialization that focuses on the theoretical, philosophical, and ideological underpinnings of education as well as the social and cultural contexts in which education takes place. Formerly known as “educational foundations,” the SJI specialization draws heavily on philosophy, history, sociology, and other social sciences in its approach to the study of education within varying local, national and international settings. Accordingly, ethics, epistemology, historiography, political economy, sociology, social and political theory, comparative education, and cultural studies provide the conceptual lenses through which education is systematically examined. SJI courses thus explore linkages between education and economic, political and cultural systems, and expose students to a range of political, moral-ethical, and epistemological frameworks for thinking about social and economic inequality, gender and race relations, multiculturalism, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, ecology, development, globalization and colonial.

Social Justice and Peace Studies – King’s University College, Ontario

The SJPS program is one of the only programs in Canada that combines the study and work of both justice and peace. This program critically examines the root causes of social injustice and violence in society, in our community and in the world. And it innovatively explores alternatives to injustice and violence by focusing on how to build peace and justice. It does this through rigorous academic training, combined with community based learning and numerous optional experiential learning opportunities in the global community. SJPS is the hub at King’s University for engaged, social innovation and active learning in the creation of a more just and peaceful community and world.

Social Justice and Equity Studies – Brock University, Ontario

Social Justice and Equity Studies is interdisciplinary, diverse and pluralistic in its theoretical traditions, substantive problematics, methods and approaches. Our program seeks to enact an emancipatory politics of knowledge in favouring voices and perspectives that have been historically marginalized and who are actively resisting domination.

Global Development Studies – Queen University, Ontario

Development Studies is an exciting and evolving interdisciplinary field that examines processes of political, economic and cultural change from the grassroots to the global. What distinguishes the department of Global Development Studies at Queen's is its research-orientated program that combines strong pedagogy with cutting-edge analysis to help students explore what development means and how is it practiced in a complex and changing global context.

DPhil in International Development – The University of Oxford

The DPhil in International Development provides an opportunity for outstanding students to pursue in-depth research into processes of social, political and economic development and change in the global South, in a uniquely multidisciplinary academic environment. It can form the basis for an academic career or for a senior post in policy research.

Master of Arts Interdisciplinary Studies, Community Development – Athabasca University

Community development is the process of supporting and building communities through purposive action. Its practitioners apply theories and concepts that are related to the structures and participants involved. Building on analytical materials and skills, this course examines the nature of community in its variety of forms; issues and conditions that have an impact on communities; forces at work within communities, as well as those operating from outside; variations in community practice(economic and social development, social planning) and geographical setting; and applications in professional and academic fields as varied as education, literacy, economic development, health, social, and human services. Perspectives on the community that arises from policy setting, cross-cultural relations, personal and global involvements, and practice strategies will also be examined as will specific concerns of Indigenous communities. In this course, we explore prospects for a sophisticated understanding of community, and deft interventions in a context of swift, often chaotic realignments. The focus will be local community autonomy, self-help, mutual aid, and democratic process. An overriding goal will be the integration of themes, ideas, and practices.

Ujamaa Biblical and Theological Community Development and Research – University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Ujamaa Centre is an interface between socially engaged biblical and theological scholars, organic intellectuals, and local communities of the poor, working-class, and marginalised. Together we use biblical and theological resources for individual and social transformation.
