Next Steps for Music Students

1. Download and complete the Music Theory Assessment

Students interested in studying music at The King's University must download and complete a Music Theory Assessment. The Assessment is designed to gauge the student’s familiarity and proficiency with the notes and rhythms of Western Classical Music prior to the start of their program. Please complete the theory assessment honestly. It will not prevent you from being accepted into the program.

2. Complete an audition

Students will be contacted by the music faculty with an official audition time before your audition date. To audition, they must submit a recorded audition on these same dates. Submissions can be made to charles.stolte@kingsu.ca.

Audition Submission Deadlines

  • Music scholarship applicants: A pre-audition, or, sample performance, must be submitted by video by April 26th, 2024  (please see “Recorded Audition” instructions below). Based on the written application (due March 31st) and the video, eligible students will be contacted to set up a live, on-campus audition.
  • All other applicants: Must be submitted by video by September 1st, 2024.

Audition Requirements

It is recommended that all auditioning musicians perform two contrasting selections from Western Classical Music.

Piano: selections from two different eras of Western Classical Music (Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern)
Voice: selections in two different languages from two different eras of Western Classical Music (Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern)
Strings: selections from two different eras of Western Classical Music (Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern); at least one selection with piano accompaniment
Winds: two selections contrasting in expressive style (fast/slow; technical/lyrical etc.); at least one selection with piano accompaniment
Percussion: one selection for snare drum alone; one for another percussion instrument
Guitar and Harp: selections from two different eras of Western Classical Music (Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern)

Recorded Auditions

If you are unable to audition in-person, particularly due to distance constraints, you must submit a recorded audition on or before the dates listed above. To do so, post a video (YouTube - unlisted preferred; audio and video required) and email the link to charles.stolte@kingsu.ca.

If any of the above recommendations cannot be met, please notify Charles.Stolte@kingsu.ca to confirm alternate arrangements.

The music department can connect auditioning students to the department accompanist (if required or desired). Details of payment and rehearsal can be arranged with the accompanist directly. Please contact Charles.Stolte@kingsu.ca for more information.
