Pre-Pharmacy

Whether you study here for one year, two years, or for an entire degree, King's is a great place to prepare for future professional studies. Begin your studies in a faith-based environment before continuing your education elsewhere.

What is Pharmacy? 

Pharmacists are health professionals who, in addition to dispensing prescription medication to patients, also provide information to patients about the drugs their doctors ordered for them. They explain doctors' instructions so that these individuals can use these medications safely and effectively.

After beginning your degree at King's, you can transfer to one of the following universities:

University of Alberta (U of A)

Doctor of Pharmacy

  • Only accepts 130 students per year
  • Requires GPA of 3.5 or greater
  • Application to the BSc Pharmacy degree has three components
    1. Letter of Intent
    2. Pharmacist consultation
    3. Interview
  • Requires a minimum of:
    • 6 credits in each General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and English
    • 3 credits in each Biology (cell biology), Biochemistry, Mathematics (algebra or calculus), Statistics, and Microbiology

King’s can offer the pre-professional study required for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program at the U of A.

NOTE: The Organic Chemistry cannot be taken at King's until the second year of study; however, it may be taken off-campus at other institutions.

Graduate studies in Pharmacy

  • Requires a minimum 3.0 GPA or 72% average in last two years of a degree.

For the graduate program, King’s can offer a Bachelor of Science degree for admission. Entrance requirements are very competitive: the U of A accepts 10 students out of an average of 500 applicants per year.

University of Toronto (U of T)

Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (5 years)

  • 240 students admitted a year (out of over 1,000 applicants). 10% admitted from outside Ontario.
  • Requires one year of undergraduate study including
    • 6 credits in each Biology, Physics, and either Humanities or Social Sciences
    • 3 credits in Chemistry, Calculus, and English
  • Minimum 70% average
  • Completion of the University of Toronto Pharmacy Admissions Test (UTPAT)

Graduate studies in Pharmacy

  • Requires a 4-year degree in the natural/life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, or pharmacy.
  • Minimum GPA 75% in last two years of full-time study

King’s can offer the first of pre-professional study for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program at the U of T. For the graduate program, King’s can offer a Bachelor of Science in Biology or Chemistry and numerous degrees in the social sciences for admission.

University of Manitoba (U of M)

Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy

  • Requirements are similar to those of University of Alberta

Graduate studies in Pharmacy

  • Requirements are similar to those of University of Alberta

NOTE: Even though the minimum entrance requirements may indicate only one year of undergraduate study, students with two years of study or a complete degree will have the most success in being admitted into the various pharmacy degree programs.
