Edmonton Poetry Festival & Poem in Your Pocket Day

Did you know April is Poetry Month? This month, Edmonton is hosting their Poetry Festival. This blog is going to answer all of your frequently asked questions and tell you more about Poem in Your Pocket Day, the national activity for the month of April!

Q: What is the Poetry Festival?
It’s an annual celebration of poetry and spoken word in Edmonton and Alberta. If you love to listen to poetry, write poetry or spoken word, this is the place to be during those days!

Q: When did this event start?
According to their about page, this festival started way back in 2006! It was important to represent a whole variety of poetry groups in the city.

Q: When is the Poetry Festival?
It happens from April 22-29. You have one week to listen to a variety of amazing artists.

Q: I don’t really write poetry… can I still come?
Of course you can! Everybody and anybody is more than welcome to join, listen and have fun!

Q: Is there a way I could volunteer for this event?
Yes you can! They are always looking for volunteers. You can find the sign-up sheet here!

In light of the Poetry Festival, whether you are a poet or a poet and you didn’t even know it, you can participate in something called the National Poem in Your Pocket Day!

Every year during the month of April, people celebrate poetry and spoken word by carrying your favorite poem in your pocket and sharing it with multiple people throughout the day.
