Run for First Year Rep!

Feb 29, 2016

Hi Future King’s Students!

As a King’s student, you’ll be sure to have lots of contact with The King’s University Students’ Association (or TKUSA for short - pronounced *ta-koo-sah*). If you're interested in being a part of the TKUSA in your first year, you can run as First Year Representative! Check out my interview with Travis Godfrey, this year's First Year Rep, and see if this is the position for you!

How did you hear about King’s and why did you decide to come?

I heard about King's from a number of family and friends who spoke very highly of King's. I decided to come because of the high recommendations. Additionally, I came because I felt it was a good idea to go to a smaller institution. At a smaller institution I felt that I could make the most of it better than I would be able to at a larger school. I was right.

Why did you run for First Year Rep?

I ran for First Year Rep because student government has always been something that I have enjoyed and something that I feel is important. I also ran because I really wanted to make the most of what I could this first year. I enjoy representing and advocating for people, particularly when they are my friends and classmates.

What are some things that you have been working on as First Year Rep?

My role as First Year Rep did not have a very specific portfolio, so I got to get involved in a variety of things this year. With one of the VP’s, I assisted in restructuring the TKUSA organization. I've spent time this year trying to get more student involvement in TKUSA. I'm also happy to report that a ice skating surface may be a possibility for next year! That project is something I've been working on as well.

Why is it important for there to be a First Year Rep position?

The First Year Rep position is important because it recognizes a special, and large group of students who have the most potential to be under-represented. The First Year Rep is also able to learn first-hand about student government at King's and will be able to contribute in greater ways to King's down the road because of the experience.

What would you tell students who want to get involved in TKUSA through the First Year Rep position?

Please run! It is a great way to get involved in the school and serve your fellow first years. First Year Rep is great because you have a mandate from only the first years, so you can focus on them. And don't worry if you don't get elected, you'll have many more opportunities like this in the near future!

Cheers,

Josh
