Furnishings

All rooms come fully furnished. For a list of what's included with each residence option view our tower room,  tower suite, and apartment pages.

Wi-Fi

Students have unlimited access to hi-speed wi-fi in each residence.

Cable Hook-ups

Cable packages are not included; however, the Apartment Residence allows for cable hookups. Students need to make their own arrangements if interested. Cable is provided in the Tower Media Lounge and Apartment Lounge.

Air conditioning and heating

Every residence comes equipped with AC to keep you comfortable.

Parking

Parking is FREE in the east student parking lot and on the streets surrounding King's. Power stalls cost $150 per semester.

Printing services

Money is pre-loaded on to your student card at the start of each semester. Networked printers are available 24 hours in the Tower Study Lounge and Apartment Lounge.

Campus security

• Every residence room requires a key and key card to be accessed. Main entrances are all key card controlled.
• Between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., there are campus security personnel on duty.
• After 11 p.m., all external doors to the main campus are locked and internal gates, which close off external hallways of the building, are also locked. There is one secure entrance that allows students to access the Tower after 11 p.m. (because there is no curfew). This entrance requires a key card. Overnight security personnel are available by phone after 11 p.m. Residence Assistants (RAs) and the Coordinator of Residence Life, who live on campus, are also available 24/7 if there are any problems.

There are recommended packing lists for the tower, tower suites, and apartments. 

Cleaning and laundry products

Make sure to pack your own cleaning and laundry supplies! Laundry facilities are available on floors two, three, five, and six of the Tower and on all floors of the Apartments. Washing machines and dryers are operated using a laundry card which works like a re-loadable debit card. Starting in the fall, students can pay for their laundry via a phone app. Detergent is not supplied.

Your own bedding

All mattresses in residence are twin-sized.

• Tower rooms and Apartments: mattresses are standard twin-sized beds, measuring 75 inches by 39 inches. The height is approximately 12 inches (30.5cm).
• Tower suites: mattresses in are extra-long twin sized beds, measuring 80 inches by 39 inches. The height is approximately 12 inches (30.5cm).

There are a few items not allowed in residence:

• Hot plates
• Pets (fish are allowed if they are in a bowl)
• Alcohol
• Space heaters
• Halogen lights
• Candles
• Incense
• Gasoline, kerosene, and other flammable fuels
• Drugs and drug paraphernalia (hookas, bongs, shisha pipes, etc.)
• Weapons or gun-like objects (e.g. airsoft, paintball guns, etc.)
• Amplified music without headphones (including guitar, keyboard, drums, DJ equipment, etc.)
• Non name brand command strips (Contact Residence Life Coordinator or Facilities if you have questions about this)

A few additional things not to bring to the Tower rooms:

• Microwaves
• Toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, and any other cooking appliances with exposed elements or flames
• Rice cookers, slow-cookers and other kitchen appliances
  • Plug-in kettles, coffee makers, Tassimos, Keurigs, and mini-fridges are allowed

Where do I eat if I live on campus?

1. Those living in the tower rooms are required to buy a meal plan through our cafeteria. Some small appliances are permitted.
2. Small kitchenettes are included with each tower suite to cook food. Tower suite students are not required to pay for meal plans
3. Those living in the apartments are not required to buy a meal plan. Full kitchens are included with each apartment.

I have severe food allergies. How can I make sure there is food for me to eat?

If you have allergies or dietary restrictions of any kind, contact Kiel Jaravata, Residence Life Coordinator. They can either place you in a tower suite or an apartment so that you can have access to a kitchen to make your own food, or they can arrange for you to sit down with the staff of the Choices Café and develop a meal plan that suits your needs!

Christmas Break

During the Christmas break the cafeteria closes, so if you need to stay with us over the break, we ask that you communicate that to us as soon as possible! Information about living in the tower during Christmas break is communicated closer to Christmas.

The Tower Suites and Apartments remain open and accessible to the students throughout the Christmas break.

All Other Breaks

Students can stay in residence throughout all other breaks and holidays during the school year.

Summer Break

Limited apartment spots are available for rent during the summer. For more information, see spring and summer student housing.

When giving your address, make sure it is written in the following format:

Room Numbers

Tower and suite room numbers should be written in the following format:

• T(room number), e.g. T601

Apartment room numbers should be written in the following format:

• V(apartment number, room number), e.g. V10.1

Concerns about mail delivery?

As best as possible, our front desk will sort out mail not written in the correct format to ensure it is delivered to you. Are you concerned about an item that did not arrive? Contact the front desk, or your Residence Assistant (RA).

Is there an application deadline?

While there is no official residence deadline, residence rooms can fill up fast. We strongly suggest you pay your residence deposit as soon as possible to secure your spot in residence. First-year students who apply for residence and pay their deposit before June 15 of each year are guaranteed a spot.

When is the best time to apply for residence?

Residence spots are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. This means you should apply as soon as possible to ensure you have a spot in residence. The residence application opens at Fall Open House in October for the following fall intake.

Who do I contact if I have questions about residence or the residence application?

Is my $500 residence deposit refundable?

Unfortunately, residence deposits are non-refundable. Deposits guarantee your spot in residence and provide King’s assurance that you plan to live on campus. If you have questions about deposits contact Student Finance. 

Can I be on a quiet floor?

Students are paired with roommates who expressed similar preferences and interests in their residence applications. This means you will likely be matched with a roommate who has similar noise preferences; however, residence does not have a designated quiet floor, and we cannot guarantee that you will be on a floor with other quiet people.

How are roommates selected? Can I request a roommate?

The residence application contains a series of questions on your personal preferences and interests (e.g. sleeping schedule, music tolerance, etc.). Students are paired with roommates who expressed similar preferences and interests on their residence applications.

You can also request a particular roommate. There is a section in the residence application that allows you fill in the name of your preferred roommate; however, it is very important that your selected roommate has also requested you in their Residence Application. If they have not requested you, your request will not go through.

Are floors co-ed or are they separated according to gender?

Floors in both the tower and the apartments are co-ed; however, individual rooms/suites/apartments are single gender.

Sometimes, there is one all-girls floor in the tower. On the residence application form, you can request an all-girls floor. If enough girls have expressed interest, an all-girls floor will be created.

Can I contact my roommates before move-in day?

Residence Life strives to send out roommate assignments for incoming fall students in late summer. Students who apply after roommate assignments have been sent out will not receive their roommate assignment before move-in day. Winter term incoming students will receive their roommate assignments on move-in day.

Can I move in on a day other than move-in day?

We expect all students to arrive on their designated move-in day. On move-in day, we have students and staff available to help you move in, programming to help you meet your floor, and a chance to get to know other students before Orientation and class begin! We also have awesome events happening all through the week, so please plan on staying on campus to get to know your roommate and classmates better! Staff may not be available to check you into residence if you arrive outside the times outlined here. Contact Kiel Jaravata, Residence Life Coordinator to request an alternate check-in time if there are extenuating circumstances.

Is there a behavioural/lifestyle agreement?

King’s strives to be a place that models Christian character and embodies values such as respect, trust, cooperation, and honesty. We don’t require students to sign a specific agreement with lifestyle expectations, but all residents are required to adhere to the Residence Life Community Living Standards.

Roommate agreement

All residence students are required to complete a roommate agreement with their roommates at the beginning of the year. Paper copies are provided at the first floor meeting of the semester. Throughout the year, roommates should review the document to ensure that agreements continue to reflect the needs of all roommates. This is especially important at the beginning of a new semester when class schedules can require changes. View the roommate agreement.

RA Events

Residence assistants host events most nights of the week. These events vary in location and in kind. Often, residence assistants hold nightly events in the Tower Kitchen Lounge. The Programming lounge was created to build community. It is equipped with a full kitchen, board games, dining table, and lounge chairs. Baking nights and board game nights are examples of events that resident assistants may host. The Media Lounge is equipped with comfortable seating, a microwave for popcorn, and a large screen TV with Netflix, cable, and Blu-ray/DVD, as well as a Nintendo Switch and 6 controllers. Movie marathons and weekly view parties are commonly held in this space.

Residence Wide Events

Occasionally, larger residence events are held. An example of a larger residence event is Rez Rumble. During this event, tower and apartment floors compete in various competitions/games for prizes.

Every year there is a Bob Ross paint night, Reverse Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas parties, campus-wide laser tag, barbecues, fire pit nights, ice skating with hot chocolate, and many more!

SA Events

Residence students can also participate in a wide range of other campus-wide events hosted by the Students’ Association (see a list of past events).

SA Clubs

Residence students can also be part of clubs sponsored by the Students’ Association (see a list of King’s clubs).

Student-led Events

There are also many student-led events in residence. For example, residents that cannot go home for Thanksgiving often cook Thanksgiving supper together in 6:01. As well, 5:01 is often booked by a group of students for a movie marathon or for popular TV shows.

There is no curfew; however, quiet hours are from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. During finals, quiet hours are extended 24/7. We do ask students living in residence to be considerate of other residents; therefore, we have implemented 24-hour consideration hours.

There are several people who work hard to make your residence experience the best it can be. One residence assistant lives on each floor of the tower and the apartments. It is the job of the residence assistants to organize events, handle relationship disputes, and ultimately, make sure everything is running smoothly on each floor. The residence life coordinator also lives in residence. This person oversees the work of the residence assistants and provides additional support for residence students.

We work hard to ensure our residence is place enjoyed by all and encourage and equip residents to work through disagreements and problems as much as possible on their own.

If you are having problems with your roommate or anyone else on your floor, you can contact your floor’s residence assistant. If your floor’s residence assistant is unavailable, contact any other residence assistant or contact the residence life coordinator.

Yes. Same-sex guests are allowed in residence rooms. Please sign in your guest with residence staff by emailing your name, their name, and the dates of their stay to Kiel Jaravata, Residence Life Coordinator. 

Family members are also subject to co-ed guest rules, so please plan accordingly.

It is important to note that guests cannot stay more than three days at a time, and guests are not permitted during orientation week. Find other limits on guests in the Residence Life Community Living Standards.
