Next Steps for International Students

Apply and Pay Your Tuition Deposit to Confirm Your Place at King's

To confirm your place at King's, you'll need to complete the following steps:

1. Apply and pay your application fee.
2. Submit all required documents.
3. Once your application is processed and if you meet the admissions requirements, you will be offered a conditional/initial offer requesting a $500 non-refundable deposit.  This $500 deposit is valid for one academic year in the case you need to defer your application.
4. Once we receive your $500, your final letter of acceptance along with your study permit letter will be sent to you.
5. Once your study permit has been approved, you will now be able to register for classes. To register for classes, you will pay your registration deposit of $5000 to hold classes.

Please note that you are welcome to pay your first-year tuition before applying for your study permit, as students from certain regions are required by the IRCC to pay a significant amount of the tuition before applying for their study permit. Your study permit letter will have a detailed breakdown of the cost.

Important Dates

• Fall entry
  • April 1: Pay your tuition deposit by April 1 for Fall or Winter entry to gain access to your online services and to select your classes.
  • June 15: Tuition deposit deadline. 
• Winter entry
  • November 30: Tuition deposit deadline. Once paid, you will gain access to your online services and can select your classes.

Paying your deposit

All international payments must be made via Flywire at kingsu.flywire.com. You may also make your payment locally if you are in Canada.

Once you have received your study permit letter and official letter of admission, you can apply for a study permit. You can apply for your study permit as soon as you receive admission, preferably three to six months before the semester begins to allow for adequate processing time. Some students also require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). For more information, please click here.

First-year students starting in the fall who apply and pay their residence deposit are guaranteed a Tower Room (double occupancy). Residence applications open up each year in early October.

Living off campus

If you do not plan on living in Residence, you will be responsible for finding your own off-campus living accommodations. Explore transportation options.

In addition to King’s automatic Admission Scholarships (no application required), students can also apply for competitive scholarships and awards through King’s. Find more information here.

Important dates

• February 1, 2024: Scholarships and awards application opens
• March 31, 2024: Deadline to apply for scholarships and awards

Note: Students must receive at least initial admission by March 31 to be eligible to receive award money in September.

Starting in April and after you have paid your New International Student Deposit you will be assigned a Student ID Number to access your Online Services. Once you are logged in, you will be able to:

• See important dates and deadlines
• Accept your student contractual obligations
• Update your address information
• Register in courses
• Request a letter of confirmation
• Enrol in monthly installments (monthly tuition payment plan – available only after paying your full deposit)

Starting in April and after you have paid your New International Student Deposit you will receive a “King’s Registration Information” e-mail with your program’s first-year course list. You can then register in courses! For tips, see Course Registration 101.

Note: Students must be registered in four courses (12 credits) per term to be eligible to receive scholarships and three courses (nine credits) per term to be eligible to receive bursaries.

After you pay your tuition deposit, you will be assigned a King’s student email address in May. From this point onward, official communication from King’s will be sent to your King’s email. You will be able to access your King’s email through webmail. For instructions on forwarding your King’s email to your personal email address, click here.

Checking your results

At the end of May or beginning of June you will be able to view your scholarships and awards application results online. If you have not paid your New International Student Deposit, view your results on your Application Portal; otherwise view your results in your Online Services. Then click on “Important Documents.”

Accepting your awards

To formally accept your awards, by June 15 you need to:

• Pay your New International Student Deposit
• Register in classes. You need to register in a minimum of four courses per term to accept scholarships, and at least three courses per term to accept bursaries.

A great way to earn some spending (or saving!) money through the school year is by getting an on-campus job. Most jobs are 10 to 15 hours a week and work around your class schedule. Some areas you can work in include the library, front desk reception, security, and cafeteria. Positions are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so apply online by the recommended April 30 early-bird deadline. Remember, you must be enrolled as a full-time student to be eligible to work part-time during your studies. You will also need to get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) once you are in Canada to be able to work.

This is the final step to becoming a student at King’s! Complete your registration confirmation online or book an in-person appointment through your online services for the beginning of the semester. For the upcoming semester, you will confirm the number of courses you will be taking, pay for your tuition and fees, confirm your contact information, and upload a picture for your Student ID Card. Check your King’s email closer to the date for more details.

In order to complete your online confirmation you will need to:

1. Pay the remaining balance of your tuition and fees for the upcoming semester. This balance will show in your Online Services as you go through the Registration Confirmation checklist. Make international payments via Flywire or see our local payment methods. Since international payments usually take a few days to be received you should initiate this payment one or two weeks before the confirmation deadline to ensure you will meet the deadline.
2. Submit a copy of your study permit to registry@kingsu.ca or bring it to the Registry office. You will receive your study permit when you arrive in Canada.

Confirm your study permit

To start your studies at King’s, King’s requires a copy of your study permit. Please send a copy to Admissions by email at admissions@kingsu.ca.

Book your flight

As soon as you receive your study permit, we recommend you book your flight to Edmonton. Travelling can take up to two to three days depending on your home country, so keep this in mind to ensure you arrive by Orientation Week. You will also receive a link to an Arrival Survey from the Coordinator of Intercultural Student Programming to complete regarding your expected arrival date and other important arrival information.

Exchange money for Canadian currency

We recommend you bring at least $2,000 CAN in cash to Edmonton to cover extra costs during your first month of school (e.g. rental damage deposits, utility set up costs, books, etc.). If you bring more than $10,000 CAN, be sure to declare this on the Customs Declaration card you will complete in the Canadian airport.

Pack your bags

If you are living in Residence, please note you will need to bring your own bedding, pillows, and towels, or purchase them when you arrive. Edmonton temperatures can be as warm as 30°C and as cold as minus -30°C, so you will need appropriate clothing. Most students purchase these items when they arrive in Edmonton. The King’s University Students’ Association (TKUSA) offers an extensive healthcare plan for all students through We Speak Student. There are four plans to choose from depending on what prescription, dental, vision, and extended health coverage you need. Students with comparable healthcare coverage can opt out of the plan.

If you want to purchase health insurance from your home country before leaving, please make sure it is as extensive as King's Student Healthcare Plan, otherwise you will not be able to opt out. When you arrive in Canada you will need to sign up for Alberta Health Care insurance (free) as well in order to activate the We Speak Student insurance.

At the airport

When you arrive at the airport you will go through Canadian Immigration and speak with a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer. Provide them with the following documents:

• Passport with visa in it (if applicable)
• Student permit approval letter
• Proof of your finances (the same information you provided when applying for your study permit)
• Proof that you have paid your New International Student Deposit to The King’s University
• Proof of your enrolment at The King’s University
• Any other documents you submitted with your Study Permit application

The officer will print your official Student Permit. Carefully make sure all the information printed on it is correct and make sure the study permit document has a condition or remark that indicates you are allowed to accept employment in Canada (e.g. it may say “may work", "allowed to work," or "may accept employment”). Also check that the duration of your study permit is correct. It should be for the length of your studies OR until your passport expires (whichever is sooner).

Getting to King’s

The Edmonton International Airport is 15 minutes south of the city. You are responsible for finding your own way to campus or your private living accommodations when you arrive. Here are some transportation options:

• Regular Taxi Service
• ETS Route 747 to Century Park. From there you can take a bus or the LRT to get around the city.

Once you arrive at King’s or other accommodations in Edmonton, be sure to get in contact with the Coordinator of Intercultural Student Programming to let them know you have arrived! You can reach them by email or visit them in the office. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The fall booklist is available in mid-August. The winter booklist is available in mid-December. King’s online bookstore offers both new and used books. Some students wait until the first week of classes before purchasing their textbooks so that professors can clarify which books they will need.

If you prefer completing your registration confirmation in person rather than online, book an in-person appointment through your online services. For the upcoming semester, you will confirm the number of courses you will be taking, pay for your tuition and fees, confirm your contact information and upload a picture for your Student ID Card. New student orientation

• Fall: August 30, 2023
• Winter: Monday, January 8, 2024

This two-part program helps international students adjust to life in Canada, particularly during the first few weeks.

Classes begin

• Fall: September 6, 2022
• Winter: January 3, 2023

Most labs don’t begin until the second week of classes. Check with your course instructor for more details.

Register for a locker

Find a locker in your ideal location and make note of the locker number on the door (or scan the QR code). Then log in to your Online Services and select “Register Your Locker” to sign it out for the year and put a lock on your new locker.

Student retreat

• Fall: September 13 – 15, 2023

Meet new friends and make memories at Camp Nakamun. Best of all, it’s free to attend! Add UNIV 065: Fall Retreat to your fall course registration through your Online Services. You won't be able to do this until Orientation, so don't panic if you can't find it now.
